Meaningful Feedback to Arizona Educators

Since 2010, the Maricopa County Education Service Agency (MCESA) has sought to grow high quality teachers via innovative educator evaluation and compensation systems funded by three federal Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) grants.

Why Good Educators Matter

Based on student growth, educator practice, and school climate, these rigorous and reliable systems create lasting impact. We are proud to support MCESA in the design, implementation, validation, and refinement of these systems, helping to build a comprehensive portrait of educator performance and guide instructional practice, professional learning, and leadership.

Great education starts with great educators. More than identifying who the great educators are, Basis’ research is about identifying what makes a great educator. Not only can our research reward good teachers, but it can also isolate what might be holding a teacher back, creating a culture of highly effective educators. Each good educator has the potential to transform a student’s life, shaping education outcomes for years to come.

Turnover that Benefits Students

Teacher turnover can leave students behind and keep classrooms empty, especially in underserved communities. Yet some level of turnover is beneficial, especially turnover of less-than-effective teachers. Filling every classroom with a highly effective teacher may feel impossible, but the REIL is the first step to actualizing that goal. The REIL’s revolutionary rubric and grading system are the first steps to not just knowing which teachers are good, but why they are, and how we can support them.
