Chicago Public Schools’ Teacher Residency Program
Why our Evaluation Matters
Through a comprehensive teaching residency model, the Chicago Teacher Residency, young teachers are more prepared to deal with the distinct challenges in high-need, urban classrooms. Residents are recruited from local communities to maintain strong, community-grounded ties.
Change is impossible when teachers aren’t equipped with the unique skill set to meet unique challenges. By working with young teachers in their own communities, the Residency not only shapes the next generation of educators but does so with clear community-focus.
What's Next?
Though this project is ongoing, our goals remain clear. By 2027, we hope to
- increase the number of teachers prepared to fill high-need subject areas within a network of high-need schools.
- ensure that the residents are representative of the school and its community.
- achieve an average retention rate of 85% by increasing support provided to novice teachers within partner schools.
Individual Strategies for Individual Needs
When it comes to complex education systems in high-need areas, standard preparation just doesn’t cut it. Teachers face unique and novel circumstances without the preparation needed to excel.
By investing in residency programs, novice teachers are able to learn about the unique challenges their school faces. Through invaluable mentorship, the Residency is creating a stronger, more sustainable community.
